It’s 1981. A small town in the Midwest wakes to discover a carnival set up on the outskirts of town. A carnival of games, acrobats, and … smiling, joking, clowns.

The year is 1988. A financial depression has hit the small Midwestern town of Willow Creek hard. The steel mill closed and the people are struggling to make ends meet. There is a sense of unease in the air and in the people. A sense of foreboding has put everyone in an especially bad mood for the last week. Causing everyone to keep to themselves, including his friends.

One morning, on the way to school, Jacob discovers a carnival being set up on the outskirts of town, in a field next to a grove of trees. One from what he can see, along with some old school carnival rides, was filled with sideshow freaks, animals, games of skill and chance, music playing through the air, and clowns. Maybe this is what his friends need to cheer them up. To break them out of their funk.

Excited, he grabs his friends on the way to class and made plans to go after school.

After school, and after picking up his little brother Timmy, Jacob and his friends head to the carnival. Jacob’s mom said she would be there about 2 hours to pick up Timmy. Since Timmy can’t ride most of the rides, they head first to the midway to play some games.
